Let Clients Send a Shoebox.
02 · Workpapers
Uploads arrive as one scan of five forms, a photo taken at an angle, or a file called scan_002.pdf. They come out as an ordered binder nobody had to assemble.

The Problem
The Work Nobody Bills For.
Sorting, renaming and filing client uploads happens across email, a PDF annotator and a shared drive at the same time. It is unbilled, it falls to whoever is free, and every hour of it is an hour not spent on the return.

How It Works
Four Things Happen to Every Upload.
Step 1 of 4
One File In, Five Documents Out.
Clients scan a stack in a single pass. SignalsHQ detects where one form ends and the next begins, splits the file, and treats each form as its own document with its own review state.
Step 2 of 4
Matched by Content, Not by Filename.
A file called scan_002.pdf tells you nothing. SignalsHQ reads the form itself, identifies the type and tax year, and ties it to the checklist item it satisfies, so the binder builds in return order as documents arrive.
Step 3 of 4
Wrong Year and Duplicates Get Flagged.
Clients send last year’s 1098 and the same W-2 twice. Both are caught before they reach the return, with the conflict shown side by side rather than as a silent rejection.
Step 4 of 4
Review Marks the Figure, Not the Moment It Moves.
Review and markup happen in the same screen: tick marks, highlights and cross-references live on the document and travel with it into the return. Figures reach the leadsheet as soon as they are read, carrying their review state with them, so a preparer always knows which numbers have been checked and which have not.

Capabilities
What Workpapers Takes Off Your Desk.
Multi-document splitting
A single scan containing five forms becomes five documents, each classified and matched on its own.
Content-based classification
Form type and tax year are read from the document, so filenames and client naming habits stop mattering.
Wrong-year and duplicate flags
Conflicts surface before the return is built, with both versions shown rather than one silently discarded.
Markup in place
Tick marks, highlights, sticky notes and cross-references, without exporting to a second PDF tool.
Indexed in return order
The binder is numbered and ordered the way a reviewer expects to read it, and stays that way as documents arrive.
Override anything
Every split, classification and match can be corrected by hand, and the correction sticks.
What Preparers Ask First
What if it splits a form wrongly?
Drag the page boundary and the split is redone. The correction applies to that document immediately, and the original upload is always retained intact.
Can we keep our own file naming?
Yes. Firms set their naming convention and index ranges once, and documents are renamed into that scheme as they are classified.
Does it handle a photographed form?
Yes, including angled and low-contrast phone captures. Documents it cannot read confidently are flagged for a person rather than guessed at.
